Drawing on the insights of two major modern Catholic figures, John Henry Newman (1801–1890) and Yves Congar (1904–1995), the book explores how history and theological contemplation together propel the Church's doctrinal tradition forward. In addition to harnessing the theological contributions unique to Newman and Congar, and analysing Congar's reception of Newman, the book argues that despite contextual particularity and the tumults of history, the Church’s doctrinal tradition is reliable and intelligible.
