Wednesday 23rd October 2013

On Saturday 19 October, thirteen new students of Blackfriars Hall took part in the ceremony of matriculation. This short ceremony at the Sheldonian Theatre marked their formal admission to the University, and following a brief exchange of Latin formulae, the Vice-Chancellor spoke to those present about the extraordinary opportunity afforded them in the coming years not only for study at one of the world's best universities but also for a vast range of new experiences from underwater hockey to historical re-enactment. The ceremony itself feels like something from history, with the use of Latin and the requirement to dress for the first time in the formal academic garb that the students will wear again for their exams and when they graduate. The Dean of Degrees, Dr Richard Ounsworth OP, was very proud of how carefully dressed his little flock were; this surely bodes well for their future with us.
