DESCRIPTION:Finding Christ in Prison: Why Higher Education in Prisons is a Social Justice Imperative for Christians\n \nA lecture by Professor Kenneth Parker \nIn Jesus’s parable of the kingdom (Matthew 25)\, being present to the prisoner comes with a promise: ‘Truly\, I say to you\, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren\, you did it to me‘. \nProfessor Kenneth Parker addresses the pressing need for higher education in prisons and why Christian scholars have a special calling to engage in this work. He is the founding director of the Saint Louis University Prison Program and currently teaches in Duquesne University’s Inside-Out Program\, which brings main campus undergraduates into prison classrooms to study with students who are incarcerated. \nProf Neal Hazel\, Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice\, Salford University will respond. \nProf Hazel has led more than 25 funded research projects in youth justice\, inclusion and family support. He specialises in providing useful research-informed messages for students\, policymakers/ practitioners and the third sector. In 2018\, he was appointed by the Secretary of State as a Board member of the Youth Justice Board for England and Wales\, responsible for overseeing the youth justice system. SUMMARY:Conference: Future of the Humanities - The Relevance of Art History
DESCRIPTION:This is the second conference of the Future of the Humanities Project currently being developed by Georgetown University\, Washington\, DC\, in collaboration with the Las Casas Institute at Blackfriars\, Oxford. \nUnder the leadership of Prof. Michael Scott\, the project explores the place of the humanities in developing a proper understanding of human life\, dignity\, and culture. Project seminars\, lectures\, and conferences draw on the Catholic intellectual tradition in dialogue with other religious\, philosophical\, and cultural traditions. \nThe Relevance of Art History – Roundtable discussion\nSpeakers include: Prof Martin Kemp\, Daphne Todd\, Estelle Thompson\, Kathleen Soriano\, Stephen Farthing and others.\n\nStephen Farthing RA is a distinguished artist and fellow of the Royal Academy of Art\, where he has exhibited his work. He has served as the Ruskin Master at the Ruskin School of Fine Art and is a fellow at St. Edmund’s Hall\, Oxford University. Among his well-known books are 1001 Paintings You Must See Before You Die (2006). \nProf Martin Kemp\, Emeritus Professor of the History of Art at Oxford University\, is one of the world’s leading experts on Leonardo da Vinci. He is the author of many books on art history and the relationship of science and art\, including The Science of Art: Optical Themes in Western Art from Brunelleschi to Seurat (1990) and\, most recently\, Living with Leonardo (2018). \nKathleen Soriano is a distinguished independent art curator who previously served as director of exhibitions at the Royal Academy. She has also worked at the National Portrait Gallery and directed the Liverpool Biennial\, the largest contemporary art festival in the UK. She is currently curating an exhibition of works by Harald Sohlberg at The Dulwich Picture Gallery. \nEstelle Thompson is a leading abstract artist known worldwide for her “Fuse Paintings.” Her work is displayed prominently in public galleries and other institutions\, including hospitals and universities. She has taught at De Montfort University and Wrexham Glyndwr University and currently teaches at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. \nDaphne Todd\, a renowned portrait artist\, was the first woman to serve as president of the Royal Society of Portrait Artists. HRH the Prince of Wales\, Lord Sainsbury\, and Spike Milligan are among her subjects and a number of her paintings are exhibited in the National Portrait Gallery\, London.  She is also well known as a judge on the BBC’s “The Big Painting Challenge.” \nBook tickets via Eventbrite. \n

DESCRIPTION:This lecture is part of the second conference in The Future of the Humanities Project which is being sponsored by Georgetown University in association with the Las Casas Institute\, Blackfriars Hall\, Oxford.  \nKeynote Lecture by Dr. Gabriele Finaldi\, Director\, National Gallery London  \nIntroduction by Dr. Martin Kemp\, University of oxford\nDiscussion chaired by Stephen Farthing RA\, Royal Academy of Art\nOn the occasion of the 4th centenary of Murillo’s birth\, and with the Dulwich Picture Gallery having such a strong representation of the artist’s works\, Gabriele Finaldi will explore the extraordinary paintings that resulted from his friendship with Don Justino de Neve\, a canon of Seville Cathedral. \nDr. Gabriele Finaldi serves as director of the National Gallery\, London\, where he was a curator from 1992 to 2002 before taking the post of deputy director for collections and research at the Prado in Madrid. His publications include The Image of Christ (2000); Baroque Painting in Genoa (2002) and most recently\, as a coauthor\, Sorolla: Spanish Masters of Light (2019). \nProf Martin Kemp\, Emeritus Professor of the History of Art at Oxford University\, is one of the world’s leading experts on Leonardo da Vinci.
