SUMMARY:An Engine Whose Motive Power is the Soul
DESCRIPTION:‘An Engine Whose Motive Power is the Soul’: Recovering the Dignity of Labour in Victorian Critiques of Industrialisation and Political Economy’ – Dignity Series Seminar\n\nA paper delivered by Prof Rosemary Mitchell \nWith the advance of industrialisation in the 1830s and 1840s\, critical commentators\, writers and artists in Victorian Britain became increasingly concerned\, not only about housing\, sanitary and working conditions\, but also the dehumanising character of both factory work and the theories of political economy which underpinned mass production. This paper will explore how these common concerns were expressed by individuals as diverse as Karl Marx\, Elizabeth Gaskell\, Ford Madox Brown\, and John Ruskin. It will briefly reflect on what their analyses have to say to our current concerns about the modern workplace as a place in which our sense of our shared humanity and the dignity of our labour are both at risk. \n  \nProf Mitchell (B.A.\, D.Phil.\, Oxon.; PGC in HE\, Open) is Professor of Victorian Studies & Deputy Director of the Leeds Centre for Victorian Studies and Associate Editor of The Journal of Victorian Culture \n  \n

SUMMARY:The Dangers of Totalitarianism Today
DESCRIPTION:’The Dangers of Totalitarianism Today – The Banality of Evil from the Perspectives of Hannah Arendt and Simone Weil’ \nA lecture by Dr Marie Cabaud Meaney \n  \n \nHave we learnt our lesson from the 20th century? Is the mantra of “never again” enough to prevent a regime like the 3rd Reich from raising its ugly head anew? Understanding the roots of the problem is key which is why Hannah Arendt wrote her magisterial work on The Origins of Totalitarianism\, while Simone Weil analyzed the issue from a religious angle. In a totalitarian regime\, evil appears banal – which makes it so insidious. Simone Weil and Hannah Arendt both investigated this phenomenon in a similar manner while giving a different diagnosis and proposing diverse solutions. Let us see what we can glean from their thoughts for our times. \nDr Meaney is an alumna of Oxford University\, where she studied for her doctorate and an M.Phil. in Modern Languages; she also has an M. Phil. in philosophy from the International Academy of Philosophy in Liechtenstein and a D.E.U.G. from the Sorbonne in Paris. She is the  author of Simone Weil’s Apologetic Use of Literature: Her Christological Interpretations of Ancient Greek Texts (OUP\, 2007)\, Brücken zum Übernatürlichen: Simone Weil über das Böse\, den Krieg und die Religion (Bernardus\, 2018) and the booklet Embracing the Cross of Infertility. She is a Visiting Lecturer at the International Theological Institute in Vienna.

SUMMARY:Theories of the Body\, Theories of the Mind
DESCRIPTION:Human Dignity Seminar Series \n \n  \nTwo seminars will be held on the relationship between pietism (a form of reformed lutheranism)\, education\, and the process of state building during the 18th Century in Prussia and Saxe-Weimar. \nThe first seminar concerns the three elements that developed through the decades and came together in the establishment of a new educated social class with a very specific understanding of women’s education and role in society. At this point the two territories\, Prussia and Saxe-Weimar differed after the napoleonic period. The reasons for this were partially due to Prussia’s reception of rouseaunian thought on education and women. In Saxe-Weimar von Hippel’s writings were more influential and an example of this is the action taken on the part of the Weimar Women’s Association to improve women’s education in the duchy. \n  \n  \nThe second seminar (on 12th June) picks up from where the previous one left off. It looks more closely at the educational debates that arose during the second half of the 18th Century. Debated were the consequences of equal education for women on the new emerging social order. The second half of the seminar looks at the concrete application of an educational initiative in Weimar through the Women’s Association in the post-napoleonic period. \nThe seminar is led by Dr Marystella Ramirez Guerra
