SUMMARY:Identifying the Christian Imagination
DESCRIPTION:The Christian Literary Imagination Series\n \nOver the course of the 2020-2021 academic year\, the Future of the Humanities Project is sponsoring a series of webinars on the Christian literary imagination in collaboration with Blackfriars Hall\, University of Oxford. The ‘Christian Literary Imagination Series’ will explore the role and function of the arts and humanities in the development of the individual and society. \nThe series features talks by distinguished scholars from both sides of the Atlantic discussing authors or works from Shakespeare to Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Each speaker aims to examine the term ‘Christian imagination’ through a discussion of a particular writer\, or an aspect of the term. The hour-long virtual events will be followed by a Q & As chaired by Professor Michael Scott. \nIn the opening session of the series\, Michael Scott and Joseph Simmons\, SJ\, will explore the derivation of the term the ‘Christian Literary Imagination’ and the ways that the Christian intellectual tradition manifests itself both overtly and covertly. The discussion will draw on writers from the dramatists of Medieval morality plays to authors of the present day. \nThis event is free and hosted on Zoom by Georgetown University.

SUMMARY:Is There a Threat to Free Speech Worldwide?
DESCRIPTION:A Transatlantic Dialogue\nOctober 2020 is an intensely busy month around the world for elections in democratic states and other societies. Before Americans officially vote on 3 November\, at least 11 other national elections and three major referenda will have taken place—from New Zealand to Kyrgyzstan\, Lithuania to Bolivia\, Tanzania to Chile. The stakes are high everywhere\, but in many places\, incumbent leaders have cracked down on independent media or found other ways to challenge free expression and public assembly in order to influence the results. The global coronavirus pandemic has been a complicating factor\, giving many autocrats cover for interfering with orderly transfers of power. \nThis transatlantic forum will explore whether the threat to free speech is becoming a worldwide phenomenon and discuss the myriad consequences for democracy and freedom. Speaking from Washington\, London\, Berlin\, Oxford\, and New York\, American diplomat Donald McHenry\, British human rights activist Baroness Mary Goudie\, German editor Michael Naumann\, and Indian journalist Salil Tripathi will engage with a worldwide audience. The conversation will be moderated by Professor Michael Scott\, Senior Dean and Fellow at Blackfriars Hall\, the University of Oxford\, and Sanford J. Ungar\, director of the Free Speech Project at Georgetown University. \nThis event is sponsored by the Free Speech Project (Georgetown University) and the Las Casas Institute\, hosted by Georgetown University on Zoom.

SUMMARY:Bundle of Duties: Property\, Self-Perfection\, and Providence
DESCRIPTION:In his recent encyclical\, Fratelli tutti\, Pope Francis presents a ‘re-envisaging [of] the social role of property’. While the Pope restates and develops Catholic social teaching (CST) on this point\, the fundamentals of this teaching are perennial. While affirming the right to private property\, CST underscores divine purposes integral to this right. These purposes contextualize this right and place obligations upon owners. As this talk will argue\, property within CST is not merely a ‘bundle of rights’ that owners possess\, but more fundamentally a ‘bundle of duties’—duties to self and society\, duties which the right to private property must safeguard\, not subvert. \nJames Bergida is a Junior Research Fellow at Blackfriars and a Research Fellow in Philosophy\, Politics\, and Economics at the Canterbury Institute. He has published on the Catholic approach to private property in the Journal of Markets & Morality and is currently conducting research on theories of distributive justice. He is a member of several academic societies\, including the American Academy of Religion and the Society for Business Ethics. \nThis event is free and open to all. \n
