SUMMARY:Humanitarian Assistance in International Law
DESCRIPTION:Marina Sharpe\, Associate Professor of International Law at the Royal Military College Saint-Jean\, has written the first comprehensive account of how public international law governs humanitarian assistance across multiple contexts. Structured by humanitarian assistance contexts rather than legal regimes\, and showing how international law applies in real-world operational settings\, Sharpe examines how international law governs UN\, state\, and non-state humanitarian actors. She will be hosted by the Las Casas Institute on Monday the 16th of November at 4pm in the Aula of Blackfriars Hall to discuss the themes of her book. Emanuela-Chiara Gillard\, Senior Research Fellow at the Oxford Institute for Ethics\, Law\, and Armed Conflict\, and Claude Maon\, Legal Director of Intersectional Law at Medecins Sans Frontieres\, will act as discussants. Hugo Slim\, Director of the Las Casas Institute\, will chair this event. \nMarina Sharpe’s book is available for purchase through OUP and a discount is available with the code: AUFLY30. \nThis event is free and open to everyone. Registration in required. \nspeakers\nMarina Sharpe\, Associate Professor of International Law at the Royal Military College Saint-Jean. Prior to joining RMC Saint-Jean\, Professor Sharpe was Senior Legal Officer with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Representation to the African Union in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia). She has also been a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at McGill University’s Faculty of Law\, Senior Research Fellow at Global Canada\, legal officer at human rights NGOs in Kampala\, and a lawyer with the New York firm Cravath\, Swaine & Moore LLP. \nEmanuela-Chiara Gillard\, Senior Research Fellow at the Oxford Institute for Ethics\, Law\, and Armed Conflict. From 2007 to 2012 she was Chief of the Protection of Civilians Section in the Policy Development and Studies Branch of the United Nations Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and for seven years prior to joining OCHA\, Emanuela was a legal adviser at the International Committee of the Red Cross. \nClaude Maon\, Legal Director of Intersectional Law at Medecins Sans Frontieres. Before joining MSF\, she worked as an attorney at the Brussels Bar. She also worked with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Avocats Sans Frontieres (ASF)\, focusing on access to justice and the fight against impunity in several African countries.

SUMMARY:Religious Symbolism and Political Life: Comparative Perspectives
DESCRIPTION:This online Javeriana–Oxford seminar will bring together scholars and practitioners to discuss selected cases of the political use of religious symbolism in different contexts around the world. It will explore how religious symbols acquire political meanings\, shape public imaginaries and identities\, and illuminate the relationship between religion and political life. The seminar forms part of a broader comparative research programme\, with subsequent events extending the discussion to Latin American and Colombian cases. \nThis online seminar will take place at 4pm (GMT) on Thursday the 26th of November. Open to all\, please register via Zoom. \nSpeakers\nDr Eduardo Gutiérrez González is a Junior Research Fellow at Blackfriars Hall\, University of Oxford\, and Assistant Professor at the Center for Theological Formation at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana (Colombia). His research explores political and religious imaginaries\, peacebuilding\, and the relationship between faith and public life\, with a particular focus on Colombia. \nDr Maria Power is a Senior Research Fellow at the Las Casas Institute for Social Justice\, Blackfriars Hall\, University of Oxford. Her research focuses on religion\, conflict and peacebuilding\, with particular expertise in the role of religious communities in conflict transformation and the Northern Ireland peace process.
