Vacancy: Senior Research Fellow & Departmental Lecturer in Medieval and Scholastic Theology
23rd January 2026
Blackfriars is delighted to announce that applications are now invited for an exciting new post: Senior Research Fellow and Departmental Lecturer in Medieval and Scholastic Theology.
The role is jointly held between Blackfriars (0.5FTE), where the postholder will serve as Senior Research Fellow and Director of the Aquinas Institute, and the Faculty of Theology and Religion (0.5FTE), University of Oxford, where the postholder will serve as a Departmental Lecturer.
The postholder will deliver undergraduate and graduate teaching, supervise postgraduate research, exercise academic leadership, and pursue an active programme of original scholarship within the field.
The post is designed to ensure continuity and development of teaching and research in medieval theological traditions (c. 800–1400), with particular strengths in Scholastic Theology and its dialogue with Philosophy, Ecclesiastical History, and contemporary theological questions.
Through their work at Blackfriars, the postholder will play a significant role in promoting Medieval and Scholastic Theology, including the thought of Aquinas and the theological tradition associated with him, within Oxford and internationally, supporting promising young scholars, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and contributing to the wider public and ecclesial engagement of theological scholarship.
Blackfriars and the University of Oxford more generally offer an exceptional academic environment. The provision of libraries within the collegiate University is among the very best in the world; and Oxford, as a pre-eminent centre for medieval/scholastic thought for centuries, has a particularly rich tradition.
We are deeply grateful to the McDonald Agape Foundation for generously funding the post and an additional £10k annual grant to support Aquinas Institute events.
The post is a fixed-term 5-year position, tenable from 1 October 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The closing date for applications is 25 February 2026 at 12:00pm.
