Blackfriars Students Win Top University Prizes

2nd March 2026

At Blackfriars Hall, we take pride in the achievements of all our students, and are especially delighted to announce that in 2025 we had two Oxford University Prize winners:

Kit Yu Leong won an outstanding three Faculty prizes for 2025:

  • the best overall performance for 2025 for the MSc in Law and Finance;
  • the Prize for the Best Performance in Finance; and
  • the Law Faculty Prize in Corporate Insolvency Law.

Matthias Erbacher (MSt Greek and Latin Languages and Literature) won two prizes:

  • the 2025 Chancellor’s Prize for Latin Prose;
  • the 2025 Gaisford Prize for Greek Verse.

Matthais says:

My time at Oxford—a formative year I was fortunate to spend there—was profoundly shaped by the countless hours in the library and the common room of Blackfriars Hall. In the Patristic room, I lost myself in the works of classical and Christian authors, turning the pages of the Ancients with a steady hand and new delight each day. […] Yet, beyond my dialogue with the great authors of the past in the library, the true depth came alive in the animated conversations with fellow students—on literature, philosophy, history, and theology—whether in the Common Room, the Aula, the Refectory, or in the corridors of Blackfriars Hall. Blackfriars, in all this, became a cornerstone of my growth, a period I recall with heartfelt gratitude.

We send our sincere congratulations to both Kit and Matthais, thank them for their contribution to life at Blackfriars, and wish them every success for the future.Â
