AI and Workers: Who Dominates? The Subjective Sense of Work in the Era of Artificial Intelligence
Much discussion revolves around hopes for AI to increase productivity and fears of its contributing to unemployment and straining natural resources. Less discussion, however, has been dedicated to AI’s implications workers’ agency and self-development, what Pope John Paul II calls the subjective sense of work. Pope Leo XIV’s warnings against technological domination in Magnifica Humanitas gain additional clarity and weight when considered through this subjective sense. Does AI only present a threat to the subjective dimension of work, or does it also offer opportunities for expanding workers’ agency and self-development?
James Bergida and Agnieszka Wincewicz-Price will host this discussion of the moral ethics of artificial intelligence in the contemporary economy, reflecting on the insights provided by Catholic Social Teaching. This seminar will take place at 5pm Wednesday the 21st of October in the Aula of Blackfriars Hall.
This seminar is free and open to everyone. A reception will follow the event. No registration is required.
