Blackfriars Honorary Fellow Appointed Cardinal

9th October 2016

On Sunday 9th October, Pope Francis appointed His Excellency The Most Reverend Joseph Tobin CSsR, Archbishop of Indianapolis, as one of seventeen new Cardinals.

Archbishop Joseph, who was born in Detroit, was ordained Priest in 1978. Following parish ministry, he was elected General Consultor of the Redemptorist Fathers in 1991, becoming Superior General six years later.

In 2010 he spent a sabbatical period at Blackfriars Hall, researching at the Las Casas Institute, and pursuing his study into the rise of secularisation and secular culture. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Hall.

Archbishop Tobin will officially be created Cardinal at a Consistory on 19th November, at the vigil concluding the Jubilee year for mercy.

Blackfriars Hall extends its warmest congratulations.
