First Class Honours for Dominican Jubilee Scholar

2nd August 2019

Dominican Jubilee Scholar John Shinkwin, who completed a second BA in Theology and Oriental Studies at Blackfriars Hall in June, has graduated from the University of Oxford with First Class Honours and has been awarded the James Mew Senior Prize for an outstanding performance in Arabic language.

His dissertation was on reason and revelation in Muhammad Rashid Rida’s critique of Christianity. John leaves Oxford to continue his studies in Islam and Christianity at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana, where he will pursue the Master of Theological Studies degree with a concentration in World Religions World Church under Gabriel Said Reynolds and Mun’im Sirry.

John writes:

‘I am deeply grateful to the Blackfriars community, to my tutors and to the benefactors whose generosity made this degree possible. It has been a privilege to belong to the Dominican family and I want to thank the friars of the Institut dominicain d’études orientales (Idéo) in Cairo for their friendship and support in both my study of Arabic and the research for my dissertation.’
