Dr Katie Bank is a music historian based at the University of Birmingham and a Research Fellow at Blackfriars Hall, University of Oxford. Her work explores music-making in early modern England, with particular attention to its relationship to sensation and emotional experience. She is interested in how singing creates meaning—both in the past and present.

Katie is PI of a UK-based sub grant of the John Templeton Foundation grant ‘Can Beauty Save the World?’ This sub grant, ‘Singing and the Human Spirit’, combines qualitative, historical, and practice-based approaches to better understand non-religious devotion to, and participation in, sacred choral singing.
