Las Casas Institute “Dignity” Lecture Series, 2016-17

As part of the joint research project on Human Nature and Dignity, the Las Casas Institute organised a series of lectures on Human Dignity for the academic year 2016-17. The Director of the Aquinas Institute delivered one of these lectures on 21 Nov. 2016, entitled “The Holy Trinity as Source of Human Dignity and Destiny according to St Thomas Aquinas.” Dr Miguel Acosta (CEU University of Madrid) spoke on “Aquinas’ Philosophy of Human Nature and Wojtyla’s Anthropological Personalism” on 29 May 2017. The lectures are in process of being published.

Paper at Pusey House Conference, 29 June – 1 July 2016

The Director attended a conference held at Pusey House, Oxford, on the theme “A Transforming Vision: Knowing and Loving the Triune God.” He delivered a paper entitled “Humanity Created for Communion with the Trinity in Aquinas”. The collected papers have been published: George Westhaver (ed.) A Transforming Vision: Knowing and Loving the Triune God (London: SCM, 2018).

The Director attended the Dominican Seminar at Hinsley Hall, Leeds, from 6 to 8 Jan. 2017. This is an annual gathering of Dominican Friars and Sisters, and members of the Dominican Secular Institute and of the Lay Dominican Fraternities. He delivered a paper on “St Thomas Aquinas on Mercy.” A version of the paper will appear in Politics and Poetics.

Conference to help launch the Rosary Shrine, 25 March 2016

The Director helped plan, then introduced and chaired this conference held at St Dominic’s Priory, Southampton Road, London, on the topic “He Gives Himself as Friend and Food, as Ransom and Reward: St Thomas as a Guide to the Rosary Mysteries.”

Paper at Recovering Causality Conference, 24-26 June 2014

The Director attended a conference held at the Angelicum on the theme “Recovering Causality: Historical Sources and Systematic Challenges from a Thomistic Perspective” He delivered a paper entitled “St. Thomas on Christ’s Passion and Resurrection as Exemplar and Efficient Causes: How This Concept Helps us Read Scripture and Preach Christ”. This was published in Angelicum 91 (2014) 167-205.

Aquinas Lecture, Cambridge, 2014: “ ‘Of His Fulness Have We All Received’: St John and St Thomas on How Christ Saves Us

The Director delivered the Aquinas Lecture at Blackfriars, Cambridge, on 22 January 2014.

The lecture was adapted into a paper for the Recovering Causality Conference at the Angelicum later that year, and published as “St. Thomas on Christ’s Passion and Resurrection as Exemplar and Efficient Causes: How This Concept Helps us Read Scripture and Preach Christ” Angelicum 91 (2014) 167-205.
