Postgraduate Degrees

Admissions for Oxford University Postgraduate Study at Blackfriars

Our graduate students read for advanced Oxford University degrees (DPhil, MSc, MSt, MPhil, BPhil), working towards Master and Doctoral qualifications.

Students also study for Post graduate Certificates (such as PGCE) and Diplomas, and we welcome visiting students on a year’s secondment from graduate work in their own universities.

Specialist Areas

Blackfriars Hall specialises in Theology, Philosophy, Politics, History, English and the wider Social Sciences. You can find a full list here.

Our students studying human rights, social policy, refugee studies, and international relations are often associated with the research and activities of the Las Casas Institute for Social Justice, which is based at Blackfriars.

How to apply

  1. Applicants must first have been accepted by a Department or Faculty of the University of Oxford before any college or permanent private hall may consider them.
  2. Most applicants are admitted as from the start of the academic year in October (though other times are possible). Application forms are available in September of the preceding year from the University’s Graduate Admissions Office. You can find more information here.
  3. Applications are considered for any of the courses in which Blackfriars offers admission. Please consult this list of courses offered by Blackfriars.
  4. Applications are usually considered by the Tutor for Admissions.
  5. The final decision on whether to offer a place in the light of the overall competition for graduate places and the spread of those places across subject areas is usually taken by the Tutor for Admissions.
  6. Please note that any offer of a place will be subject to satisfactory completion of the financial declaration form that will be sent to the applicant as part of the offer of a place. Please consult this guidance for more details.

Finance

You can find information about Blackfriars’ grants, scholarships and bursaries here, and information on fees and finance prepared by Oxford University here.

Disabled Students

We welcome enquiries from disabled students. The nature of our old buildings inevitably makes access difficult to some areas, but we have various contingency plans which can be brought into effect and we regard problems as challenges to be overcome.

Please contact Dr Clare Broome Saunders and let us know what your needs are: in most cases we can and will meet them.
