Las Casas in the Public Sphere
10th March 2026
The Las Casas Institute has been making an impact in the public sphere recently. Our director, Hugo Slim, participated in an interview with the Global Policy Institute (GPI). An independent think-tank based in Berlin, Hugo spoke to the GPI about the need for ecological humanitarianism. An excerpt from the interview reads:
‘Unless nature is safe, thriving, productive and available, no job or cash grant can give people access to the means of survival. Humanitarians know that nature is central to human survival and vice versa.’

In addition, Hugo’s recent keynote speech at the Annual Trócaire Lecture has been reported on by the Tablet. The article by Sarah Mac Donald summarizes many of the themes touched on by Hugo in his talk. These themes include the rapid changes to earth’s climatic systems, the challenges the earth community faces addressing our shared environmental emergency, and the need to hear the ‘cry of the earth’.
