Aquinas in China

There is a growing interest in Thomas Aquinas in China, as part of China’s concern for conversation between Chinese and Western traditions of thought.

Dr William Carroll, Research Fellow, Blackfriars Hall, and a member of the Institute’s Advisory Board, regularly lectures on Aquinas’ philosophy in China. His article “China and Thomas Aquinas” appeared in Oxford Magazine No. 382 pp. 12-13. An interview with him about Aquinas in China was recently published in Humanitas, a journal of the Catholic University of Chile.

A workshop on “Thomas Aquinas and Medieval Philosophy” was held at Wuhan University in November 2016, sponsored by the Aquinas Institute and by the School of Philosophy of Wuhan University. There were 25 official participants from 12 different Chinese Universities, and the seven public lectures were attended by about 30 other local academics. Besides Dr Carroll, two other members of the Institute, Prof Michael Sherwin, OP, and Prof Thomas Joseph White, OP, spoke, as did Prof Tianyue Wu of Peking University.

Dr Carroll and Prof Tianyue Wu are organising a Workshop on “Medieval Philosophy and the Modern World” to be held at Peking University from 12-14 April 2019. This will be jointly sponsored by the Aquinas Institute and the Faculty of Philosophy of Peking University.

Dr Carroll’s article “Thomas Aquinas on Creation and Science: An Invitation for China, and Not Only for China” was published in Modern Age 58 (Fall 2016).
