Visiting Scholars – Aquinas Institute

Each year Blackfriars Hall welcomes Visiting Research Scholars associated with its Research Institutes.

Visiting Research Scholars are granted membership of the Senior Common Room at Blackfriars, may use a desk in the office of the Research Institute with which they are associated,  have access to the Blackfriars Library with its excellent holdings in Catholic theology and in philosophy, as well access to the libraries, lectures, and seminars of the University of Oxford.

They are invited to social events of the Institute and of the wider Hall. They are normally invited to give a seminar paper or special lecture during their stay in Oxford, or to speak at a Colloquium if one takes place during their stay.

Recent Visiting Research Scholars

Recent Visiting Research Scholars associated with the Aquinas Institute include:

  • Prof John Love (Associate Professor of Systematic Theology, Mount St. Mary’s University, Emmitsburg), to work on a commentary on the Secunda Pars of the Summa Theologiae
  • Prof Janice Chik Breidenbach (Assistant Professor of Philosophy, Ave Maria University), to work on Thomistic Animalism
  • Prof John Finley (Professor of Philosophy, Kenrick-Glennon Seminary, Saint Louis), to work on the metaphysics of gender and on the unity of the human being
  • Prof Barbara R Walters-Doehrman (emeritus Professor of Sociology, City University of New York), to work on the Office of Corpus Christi and especially Aquinas’ choice of the music for the Office

Accommodation

The Institute is not able at present to provide or fund accommodation for Visiting Scholars, but the Hall is able to offer some advice in how to find accommodation in Oxford.
