Gender and Patterns of Intolerance in Medieval Britain and Ireland
14th February 2019: 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm GMT
Dignity Series Seminar
Dr Clare Downham, Institute of Irish Studies, University of Liverpool, will deliver a paper on ‘Gender and patterns of intolerance in medieval Britain and Ireland’
A range of scholars including John Boswell (‘Christianity, Social Tolerance and Homosexuality’), R.I.Moore (‘The Formation of a Persecuting Society’) and Geraldine Heng [‘The Invention of Race in the European Middle Ages’) have noted changing patterns of intolerance during the European Middle Ages. The study of these topics is also deeply influenced by contemporary attitudes. This paper is an exploratory look at changing attitudes towards women and power in the tenth century.
