Accommodation Heating and Appliances

Keeping warm and comfortable

To keep your room and common areas warm, it is important that you understand how the heating systems in our properties work, and how to best to achieve a comfortable temperature. A comfortable temperature range is between 18 and 22 degrees celsius. We have provided thermometer stickers in every student room to help you monitor your room temperature and energy usage. Students should also refer to our Accommodation Heating Policy for its discussion of sustainable energy usage and the general heating schedule we keep in the housing.

At 16 St John Street, in each student room and throughout the building, there are a number of storage heaters (pictured). These can be tricky to figure out but they heat your rooms effectively during the colder months of the year. They store heat overnight and dispense it throughout the following day depending on how you set the dials on the top of the unit. We have created a handy battle-card near every heater in the building that explain how to set your unit. A digital copy is available here.

In 17 St John Street and 33 St Giles’ we use a system of hot water radiators to heat student rooms and the common areas (pictured below). A thermostatic valve at the base of the radiators can be adjusted to heat the room to your desired temperature.  We have produced another handy battle-card for this heating system linked here. The times when the heating is active in the properties is set centrally. To have the schedule adjusted please speak to the Junior Dean of Facilities or the Bursary Team.

For more detailed instructions on using these heating systems, please view these appliance manuals: 16 St John Street; 17 St John Street and 33 St Giles’.
