Night Safety Guide

Returning Safely to Blackfriars Hall Accommodation at Night

Oxford is a vibrant and welcoming city, but like any urban area, it’s important to stay aware when travelling home after dark. These guidelines are designed to help residents of 16–17 St John Street and 33 St Giles return safely and confidently at night.

1. Plan Your Route Before You Set Off

Choosing your route in advance helps you avoid quiet or poorly lit areas.

Recommended routes to 16–17 St John Street:

  • Beaumont Street to St John Street
  • St Giles to Pusey Street to St John Street

Recommended routes to 33 St Giles:

  • Broad Street to St Giles
  • Beaumont Street to St John Street to Little Clarendon Street to St Giles

Avoid:

  • Narrow alleyways
  • Poorly lit side streets
  • Isolated shortcuts, even if they seem quicker

2. Walk With Others When Possible

  • Walking with friends is one of the simplest ways to stay safe.
  • If you’re studying late or attending an evening event, arrange to walk back with someone heading in the same direction.
  • If you must walk alone, let someone know when you’re leaving and when you expect to arrive.

3. Make Use of University Safety Services

  • University Security Services patrol central Oxford and can respond quickly if you feel unsafe.
  • Save their 24/7 emergency number in your phone: +44(0)1865 2 89999.

4. Stay Aware of Your Surroundings

  • Keep headphones low or use only one ear.
  • Avoid walking while distracted by your phone.
  • If something feels off, trust your instincts and move towards a busier, well-lit area.

5. Keep Your Belongings Secure

  • Carry bags zipped and close to your body.
  • Keep your phone and valuables out of sight.
  • If cycling, lock your bike securely before entering the building.

6. Entering the Buildings Safely

For 16–17 St John Street:

  • Have your key or fob ready before you reach the door.
  • Ensure the door closes firmly behind you.
  • Do not allow tailgating — politely ask unknown individuals to contact the resident they are visiting.

For 33 St Giles:

  • Be aware that St Giles is a busier street with more foot traffic.
  • Enter promptly and avoid lingering outside the doorway.
  • Report any issues with lighting, locks, or the entrance to the Hall office.

7. If You Feel Unsafe at Any Point

  • Move to a well-lit, populated area such as St Giles, Beaumont Street, or Broad Street.
  • Call University Security Services or, in an emergency, the police.
  • Nearby college lodges (e.g., Balliol, St John’s, or St Benet’s) can offer assistance if open.

8. Look Out for Each Other

  • Check in with friends walking home late.
  • If someone appears distressed or unsure of their surroundings, offer help if you feel safe to do so or alert Security Services.

9. Keep the Area Around the Buildings Safe

  • Report broken lights, suspicious behaviour, or anything that feels out of place.
  • Keep entrances clear and well-lit by disposing of rubbish properly.
  • Avoid leaving valuables visible through ground-floor windows.

10. Emergency Contacts to Save

  • University Security Services (24/7): +44(0)1865 2 89999
  • Blackfriars Hall Office (During Office Hours): +44(0) 01865 6 10203
