A+ A+ A+ A+	75 and above 73-74 72-73 70-71	I	Essay well-structured and convincing; a critical, nuanced, and coherent answer. Good use of a wide range of primary and secondary reading, well analysed. Original and interesting.
A A – B+	67-9 64-66 60-63	II (i)	Essay is above average; has clear structure and argument; is based on hard work and serious reading; is thoughtful and understands the subject well. It gives sensible examples in support of arguments advanced. It should be largely free from grammatical and other linguistic errors.
B+ B B –	59 57-58 54-56 50-53	II (ii)	The essay is an average piece of work giving a reasonable response to the question, but one which may be an incomplete answer or one which lacks analytical rigour. It may be marked by some confusion in argument and small factual errors.
C + C C –	49 45-48 41-44	III	The essay is a poor response to the question showing inadequate reading or thought. It may be poorly structured or argued, or contain some serious errors of fact or interpretation.
	39 37-38	PASS	The essay shows minimal understanding of the question and contains major errors of fact or interpretation. It is poorly structured and argued. Only one redeeming feature may prevent the essay from being awarded a fail mark.
