Passions and the Life of Virtue: Taming the Menagerie Within
Sr Catherine Joseph Droste, OP
Professor and Vice-Dean of Theology at the Pontifical University of St Thomas in Rome (The Angelicum)
The last decades have witnessed renewed interest in virtue and virtue ethics, but an authentic study of virtue requires self-knowledge and a healthy understanding of passion. Growth in virtue demands that unruly passions, “the menagerie within” (Servais Pinckaers), be recognized, respected, but also tamed, by bringing them under the guidance of reason. In this context, this presentation explains attainment of true virtue by integrating Thomas Aquinas’s teaching on the proper relationship between passion and the rational powers with elements of Catherine of Siena’s teaching on “self-knowledge.”
