Societies and Activities

Blackfriars Hall students and the MCR (Middle Common Room) participate in and run a number of activities both in the Hall and the wider University, and in the local community.

These include:

Companions of the order of Malta

This is a student charity for the marginalised within the community.  The group works together with various local Catholic and Anglican churches, and some of the students at Blackfriars help organise the core work, including a sandwich run for the homeless in Oxford, which takes place on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday, and a breakfast run on a Tuesday and Thursday morning. Contact: Jamie Wilmore.

Church Schola

The Schola Magna sings at Mass and Vespers on Sunday evenings in Blackfriars twice a month and for major feasts. Our repertoire of polyphonic motets and Gregorian chant brings together Hall students, Dominican friars, and experienced musicians from the Blackfriars congregation. For more information, contact the House Cantor, Rev Dr Richard Ounsworth OP or the Choral Director, Michael Wee.

Rowing

Although Blackfriars Hall does not have its own boat club, our students take to the river with with St Benet’s Hall and Regent’s Park College.

Women’s Group

The group runs social and speaker events throughout the year, including the popular Trinity Term cream tea.

MCR Committee and Events

The MCR Committee organises a range of activities.

MCR-SCR Events

Graduate students and Hall Fellows (the Senior Common Room, SCR) combine for academic and social events each term.

Hall students are also involved in events run by the Hall’s Las Casas and Aquinas institutes, and the Anscombe Bioethics Centre.

University Clubs and Societies

The annual Freshers Fair is a good time to find out what’s available.
